The skin acts as a barrier to keep unwanted substances out of the body, limiting topical drug absorption. In many cases, a drug's properties, including molecular size and polarity, have limited its capacity to penetrate the skin. Water-based creams and gels are suboptimal at penetrating the skin's water-resistant barrier layer (the stratum corneum). The skin's water-resistance can be seen in the shower when water beads up and rolls off the skin. A New Platform For Topical Drug Delivery. The CellMedics patented cream technology is designed to effectively deliver previously troublesome drugs including unstable, hydrophilic and insoluble/poorly soluble molecules enabling specific targeting of drugs into tissue, cell, and intracellular compartments. Data from pharmacokinetic (PK) studies suggest that CellMedics topical cream formulations may be a safer more effective alternative to drug administration by pills for many medications and significantly more effective (bioavailable) than standard creams, gels and patches. This topical cream technology has the potential to be the preferred method for the administration of many drugs.
What the Data Shows
In a randomized controlled trial, a CellMedics® topical cream containing capsaicin and Harpagophytum extract showed greater improvement in all efficacy variables - namely pain, stiffness and physical dysfunction - versus an oral prescription painkiller in the symptomatic treatment of primary osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. The WOMAC osteoarthritis index, the most commonly used measure of function in osteoarthritis trials, was used to assess response to treatment between baseline and week 12. Patients treated with CellMedics topical Harpagophytum/capsaicin cream exhibited a better overall safety profile compared to those receiving the oral prescription painkiller.
Directions
Apply a thin film of cream to the painful area and rub in until fully absorbed. For optimum relief apply 2 to 3 times daily. Best results typically occur after 1 to 2 weeks of continuous use. Unless treating hands, wash hands with soap and water immediately after use. When using this product, you may experience a therapeutic heating sensation which is normal and related to the way the product works. With regular use, this sensation generally diminishes within several days. Do not apply to open wounds or to damaged or cracked skin. Do not get it on mucous membranes, into eyes, or on contact lenses. If this occurs, rinse the affected area thoroughly with cold water. Do not apply immediately before or after activities such as showering, hot tub therapy, or strenuous exercise. Do not apply heat to the treated areas immediately before or after use. Do not tightly wrap or bandage the treated area. Store at 68°-77° F.
